The longest timed section of the rally had plenty of surprises in store today, with in particular a deluge of penalties in the bike category and the withdrawal of Giniel De Villiers (VW), who at the time was 2nd in the general standings in the car category.

For the second stage in Romania, there were again plenty of changes both on the track as well as in the standings. Heavy rain soaked the route of the special all morning, turning the first loop into a veritable hell-hole for the competitors and especially the trucks. As a result, the organisers were again forced to shorten the route for the second loop.

It was in fine spring sunshine and in front of large crowds that the caravan set off from the podium in Budapest this morning, heading for Dabas, the site of the first special and its 63 km, the real start of this first Central Europe Rally. This first time-trial sector was fought out in ideal conditions: bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures, making for a very quick and bumpy track, which most of the competitors enjoyed.

A few centuries ago, the Tagus estuary was already an invitation to travel and discover. In front of the Hyeronimites Monastery, a huge monument pays tribute to the navigators who were the pride and joy of the country, like Vasco de Gama or Ferdinand Magellan. It’s in this environment conducive to adventure that the Dakar has established its first HQ for the last three years, as a prelude to a long journey across the desert. The Dakar will once again take its competitors on a journey to the capital city of Senegal. For its 30th edition, 248 bikes and quads, 204 cars and 98 trucks have been summoned to Lisbon where the start of the race will take place with stage one on Saturday January 5th. Before facing the clock, the pilots and their machines have to abide by the usual formalities during the three days of technical scrutineering and administrative checks. Safety instrument monitoring, handing in of the paperwork, weighing of the vehicles, sticking of the race numbers, booth after booth, the competitors collect stamps in their scrutineering booklet, THE essential document that will allow them to park their rides in the parc fermé before they can enjoy Lisbon till Saturday.

What if time had come? The uninterrupted series of victories conquered on the Dakar ever since 2001 has eased the Mitsubishi drivers to the rank of Dakar ‘unbeatables’ at the moment of considering a prognosis. Everyone however knows that in sports eternity does not exist. The year 2008 could indeed mean the end of a series for the Japanese constructor that witnesses more rivals closing in year after year. The list of assets that the ‘diamond’ brand has is still impressive enough to worry the rivals. The “dream team” lined up by Dominique Serieys with the likes of Roma, Masuoka, Alphand and Peterhansel sums up experience, performance and spirit of sacrifice if needed. The MPR 13 Pajero, almost unchanged this season, has shown on the previous editions guarantees of reliability that one can expect from such a high level vehicle. After 25 years of experience on the event, the existing structure is by far the best prepared of all.

Two new faces in Volkswagen’s driver line-up for Dakar Rally: Dieter Depping from Wedemark and Berliner co-driver Timo Gottschalk drive a Volkswagen Race Touareg for the first time in the Dakar Rally which starts on 5 January in Lisbon and finishes in Dakar on 20 January.
