After the triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the early title win in the American Le Mans Series, AUDI AG performed another feat with the Audi R10 TDI diesel sportscar: At the 1000-kilometre race at Silverstone (Great Britain), Audi Sport Team Joest – clinching victory as well as fourth place – secured also the champion’s title in the European Le Mans Series (LMS).

“Warm-up” in Brazil: positive start for Volkswagen team

The Volkswagen drivers Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (RSA/D) and Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/RSA) started to the Rallye dos Sertões with a good warm-up. At the ultra-short prologue over a two-kilometre course on the eve of the first leg at the starting location of Goiānia, the factory duos clinched the first and fourth positions in the classification for vehicles conforming to FIA Cross-Country Rally Regulations. From Wednesday, the rally will take the two Volkswagen Race Touareg vehicles through Brazil over a more than 4,500-kilometre distance.

By participating in the 24-Hour Race at the Nürburgring, Volkswagen tackles one of the major challenges in international motorsport yet again. The endurance run twice around the clock on the legendary Nordschleife is regarded as one of the most demanding races in terms of driving and technology. This year, the crowd of well over 200,000 enthusiastic fans lining the 25.378-kilometre circuit will witness the meeting of two legends: Volkswagen returns to the Nordschleife with a racing version of the Scirocco.

Audi has taken the lead of the manufacturers’ championship of the European Le Mans Series at the 1000-kilometre race at Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium). The two Audi youngsters Alexandre Prémat (26/France) and Mike Rockenfeller (24/Germany) in their Audi R10 TDI finished the third race of the season again in second place, thus going to the “Audi home round” at the Nürburgring on 17 August with the same points score as the Peugeot drivers Marc Gené and Nicolas Minassian.

Silverstone, the famous Northamptonshire circuit, is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary in 2008 marking 60 years since the first ever British Grand Prix in 1948. The Silverstone
Supercar Showdown, taking place on 19-20 April and featuring the opening round of the FIA GT Championship and the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy, is also Silverstone’s first event of the 2008 season and, linking in with this year’s ‘60 year’ theme, will feature a 60 Million Euro Paddock.

Acid test for a legend: even before its Europe-wide market launch the Volkswagen Scirocco that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March has to prove its prowess in the competition that puts both technology and driving skills to a tougher test than any other race in the world. Volkswagen puts the coupé, which is celebrating its comeback as a production model 34 years after its début, as a non-compromising racing version on the grid of the legendary 24-Hour Race on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife.

Even in its third year of racing the Audi R10 TDI still experiences some débuts: on the first weekend in April, the diesel-powered sportscar will compete simultaneously for the first time in two races, in America and in Europe. In St Petersburg (U.S. state of Florida), on Saturday (5 April), the second round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series will be staged. One day later, the European Le Mans Series kicks off with the 1000-kilometre race at Barcelona (Spain).

The Audi drivers are looking forward to the DTM season opener at Hockenheim on 13 April with increasingly eager anticipation: during the first official tests at Mugello, Italy, the nine factory drivers completed their extensive work programme without significant interruption. This first “matching of strengths” with the competition saw them among the front runners in any of the changing weather conditions.
